Note the date. Thirty years ago, Union Pacific was still run by actual people. They have not always been as hard-nosed and uptight as they are now. Thirty years ago I was able to get a ride-along on a branch line local just by approaching the crew with the request as they were eating lunch at the local beanery (I offered to buy their meal but they declined). Try doing something like that today.
