While 4014 is the news out in California, here in China steam continues to run on a daily basis in several locations.
I spent the last two weeks visiting a couple of these railroads and spent a significant time at Sandaoling, the last REAL steam show in the world. Sandaoling is an opencast pit coal mine located in far western China, in a region called Xinjiang.

Sandaoling is home to 25 steam locomotives, all mainline size 2-8-2's that work 24/7 hauling coal spoil and construction trains throughout this massive mine system. More importantly, this is no museum railroad or short industrial switching line, but a heavy haul mine railroad, using mainline steam in 2014.
I hope you enjoy these two photos from last week.
