Don't forget the wire alignment for pantographs must allow for cars swaying on rough track. In its last days Key System had a bit of overhead pulled down when the cars swung out far enough for the pantograph to lose contact with the wire then swing back on top of the contact wire.

On well maintained railroads the wire would be aligned so that it moved back and forth across the contact shoe to prevent wearing grooves in the shoe.
