It appears that the insulation in the Dalian Locomotives (built in China) and shipped to New Zealand has been found to contain asbestos. After dumping lead and other toxins in the U.S. they are trying a new approach and new venue perhaps?

Urgent Memo – All Mechanical and Locomotive Staff in the North Island
The RMTU has been informed by KiwiRail that the soundproofing compound used in the DL locomotives contains Chrysotile (White Asbestos). This has been confirmed by two testing authorities using sampling.
Today, further locomotives were inspected by Asbestos Solutions and they have confirmed the presence of the asbestos panelling in the engine bays and cab panelling.
The RMTU has requested KiwiRail to immediately quarantine all DL class locomotives until each locomotive is individually inspected and the loco is certified as having all asbestos compound fully contained and the locomotive is free of any airborne or surface sitting particles. We believe that this is the only way of ensuring the safety of all staff that come into contact with DL locomotives during the course of their employment.
To date KiwiRail has agreed that;
· Any train with a DL loco which has departed will continue until it arrives at a terminal station where it will be parked up
· Any DL at a terminal station will be quarantined until tested
· All testing will be completed by a certified and accredited asbestos testing company
· The engine bay and cab will be visually, surface wiped and air borne tested for asbestos
The RMTU strongly advises all members to ensure their safety. Members are reminded of their right to refuse unsafe work. Whatever your decision the RMTU will back you.
