Golden West Service questions

Yesterday up in Roseville Yard (Ca.) I saw some Golden West flat cars. (Had never seen any of these before or the G.W. covered hopper I also saw this day...)I've always only seen box cars. From the 1980's to present(?) Was it a company that provided freight cars to the railroads like RailBox, or were they provided to the shipper? An afiliat of a railroad, or it's own company. Damn! I should have GOOGLED it!
