Smoke from electrical cabinet?

I was following a BNSF manifest south of Tacoma yesterday. It had a real dogs breakfast of power, a GP39E, SD60M and a G&W painted PSAP GP38. The PSAP geep was offline.

Anyway, my question is about the GP39E. It was ill, blowing lots of blue smoke from the exhaust, but it was also blowing whitish-grey smoke from the tiny vent on top of the electrical cabinet hatch right behind the cab. What would be making smoke in there, yet not causing some sort of fault or short? It was doing it all the way from 21st st (mp 0) to nelson bennet, MP5.
