If the smoke was coming out of the louvers adjacent to the generator INSIDE the long hood, not the electrical cabinet itself, I would suspect a leaky exhaust gasket or an oil accumulation on the top deck of the prime mover between the power assemblies that was hot enough to cause smoke.
