You don't suppose the "ultimate" solution here will be tearing out at least that short tunnel in the picture, then cut/covering or retaining wall/trenching the whole section? Of course, that would probably require lowering the tracks a bit to allow for modern clearances. That short tunnel in the picture looks like there isn't much on top of it.
