One thing to add is that not all of the ex Espee snowplows have the movable side wings. These wings allow a wider cut to be taken. When working over Donner, Espee would run "super sets" of plows, i.e. two plows facing opposite directions, with four big units between. This would enable them to plow either direction without turning equipment. Also helpful for backing out of problem areas.
IIRC, back in 92, the side wings on the east facing plow on a set preparing to work east out of Emigrant Gap weren't working properly. As a result, the entire set was turned on the balloon track at Fulda. They needed all of the snow removal capability they could get that day, as they would cut through snow drifts near Cisco as high as the cab roofs.
