BNSF controls the line from Garrison (MRL interchange) to Spire Rock Ballast Pit. MRL operates Spire rock and was feeding ballast to BNSF. BNSF is getting their ballast from Fishtrap (igneous (sp?)rock) as it is harder than the decomposing granite produced at Spire Rock. Was at Spire rock on Thursday JUne 12. With oil trains and coal trains loading up the system, BNSF has entered discussion with MRL regarding reopening Homestake for empties similar to Stampede. Much work needs to be done as there are numerous rocks in the way, some small sized tunnel slumps and just a general rehabilitating of a track that has seen no maintenence in the last 25 years.
