HIstorical weather woes

Most of us know a little about the stranding of the snowbound "City of San Francisco" in the Sierras in the winter of '52. Earlier this year during heavy rains in South Texas, I was reminded of the stranding of the "Sunset Limited" near Langtry in 1954 because of high water from a hurricane (Alice?) which had moved inland. Its passengers were rescued by helicopter--or at least some of them. SP had a film about that incident in its archives at one time.

What I'm curious about is the stranding of the Rock Island's "Golden State" in central or western Kansas in snowdrifts. I think it was in the 50's. Anyone have a better fix on the date and the circumstances?

By the way, during the 1952 incident, I believe a detoured WP "California Zephyr" and other SP trains passed by the stuck "City of San Francisco" a few hundred feet away or less on the other open SP track over the Sierras. True?
