P.Kepler,
I have been documenting the Santa Cruz Branch Rail Line now for almost 5 years. Hard to believe the amount of pessimism that was directed towards the branch line when I first started covering it back in 1999. I want the SC&MB and the RTC to be successful and my contribution towards that end is photographing and writing about the operation. Below are a few more photographs from the steam event. When I have time I will put together a photo essay.
The over pressure relief valve for the boiler on SCPC 2 opened while I was at Depot Park buying a Chiggen t-shirt. The sound was deafening and must have blasted for 30 seconds thrusting a steam plume high into the air. The young rail fan standing next to the locomotive has his hands firmly planted against his ears.
SCPC #2 climbs the grade on one of the legs of the wye so the steam train can be turned for the return journey to Felton.
I’m from Pittsburgh, PA and SCPC #2’s connection with a chicken diner brings back lots of memories for me. My father was a poultry man for over 30 years and I swear we ate chicken seven days a week. I remember every time the Pittsburgh Pirates first baseman Willie Stargell hit a home run everyone at his chicken restaurant received free chicken. The Pirates announcer would announce, “Chicken on the Hill” every time Stargell hit a home run. Chasing SCPC #2 yesterday was certainly a home run for me and I want to say its “Chiggen on the Hill”.
SCPC #2 brings up the rear as the steam train heads up Chestnut Street on its journey back Felton.
