The widened Panama Canal is looking like less of a threat to intermodal than it once did. Problems include,

New ships are being constructed that are too big for the widened canal.

Massive pumps to recycle fresh water from the locks instead of letting it wash out to sea significantly increase the carbon footprint of shipping through the canal versus US intermodal.

US intermodal will be faster and in some cases cheaper than using the new canal for eastern destinations.

Suez canal is already competitive for Asia-US east cost shipping.
