When I have traveled to Japan on business, I have found that the scale of the accommodations is more suited to the Japanese, so beds are shorter, shower heads spray at navel level on a guy my size (6'3"), and so on. The interior dimensions of the cars are probably close to ours since the track gauge is the same IIRC, but the appointments are going to be on the smaller size, which is why the artist's renderings make everything seem so spacious.
