The signal systems are not directly powered off the grid. They use batteries that are charged by the grid and usually capable of keeping the signal systems functioning for a few days by themselves. Some locations have propane generators in places where the power grid is unreliable.
Fort Worth and Omaha have diesel engine backups and enough fuel to last several days, if not longer.
