I was on that trip too. Yes, we were supposed to go further but Sycan was as far as the special train went.
I think our power that day was a couple of GE U-boats. I remember the dome and the switchback on the route.
I was on a package deal with the OP&E included in the weekend.
There were lots of special trips in the early 80s: OC&E, OP&E, Nevada Northern, McCloud, 4449 to Sacramento, opening of CSRM, World's Fair Daylight, Deschutes River Canyon trip to Madras, and an Amtrak/NRHS special to Spokane from Portland (UP one way/former GN on the return).
