Weyerhaeuser spoke with forked tongue. In the 70s, Weyco tried to encourage people working at the mill to move to Bly. One of their senior managers got a bank in Klamath Falls to make mortgages in Bly with low downpayments for Weyco employees.
For a while in the mid 70s, Bly was a hoppin' place. The movie theater there was open, and there was talk of establishing a high school. My OC&E source told me the mill was so busy that the OC&E local that switched it often died on its hours of service.
When Weyco closed the mill for good, all those folks that moved to Bly were stuck with big mortgages on homes that no one wanted to buy. Hmmm, just like 2009...
