Until almost the end, SP kept alive earlier coprporations. For tax and accounting reasons assets were purchased by the different corporations and used reporting marks for the corporation that owned the asset. For example, SP red electric cars in Bay Area were owned by three different corporations and had three different reporting marks. They were SP, CP, and S.P.C. In 1937 all the red cars became SP.

My uderstanding is that new diesel locomotives were purchased by the Cotton Belt to avoid paying California sales tax on them.
