Remember that Espee's Modoc Line was originally part of the narrow gauge Nevada - California - Oregon. Most of the line was simply converted to standard gauge upon purchase by Espee, with all the steep grades and sharp curvature left in place, though I recall a later line change around Sage Hen Summit. Also, the Modoc Line was not signalled, and the few short sidings made for long wait times in Train Order territory.
