The Aussies have a love-hate relationship with England. Much of the early railroad equipment came from the USA rather than England. Their first diesel locomotives came from EMD.
Their railroad technology is very much American design. Rails are laid on ties with tieplates rather than typical English rail shoes. Couplers are American rather than English buffers.
I discovered that their railroad hand signals were identical with American west of Mississipi signals.
