When did that ever happen? They hung onto the mail
business until the PO Dept. went to the regional
mail sorting centers served exclusively by truck,
air and piggyback, with no sorting enroute, which
is what the rails had been doing. That was 1967.

When the govt pulled the mail contracts, that was the
end. The rails didn't ask for that, by petition or
any other means.
