This is the piece I was referring to:
Sgt Joe Friday says, "First of all, it was LBJ that put the last nail in the coffin of privately run rail passenger service, and he was no Republican."
I responded with this question: "What did LBJ do to put the last nail in the coffin of privately run passenger rail service?"
Poor Richard's response to my very reasonable question was: "LBJ's tenure saw the discontinuance of first class mail haulage by passenger train (anybody here remember when sending a letter via air mail was an additional charge over first class postage?). The mail business is what kept many passenger trains running. This happened in 1967, causing a surge in passenger train discontinuances, and for several railroads was the last nail in the coffin for their passenger carriage. That Amtrak began four years later seems no coincidence."
It is reasonable for me to assume in the context of the discussion that your response is supporting Sgt Joe's assertion that LBJ was responsible for the decline of passenger service.
So before you DUH me, look at the correspondence.
Still haven't seen any evidence that LBJ tried to hasten the demise of passenger service as Sgt Joe suggests.
