GN from Sandpoint to Spokane abandonment (actually from Sandpoint to Dean) was in the original 1970 merger plan. NP had better grades, Hillyard was a bad yard to switch, GN
line through downtown was going away for Expo and a new connection that pointed west would have been too costly and more. NP across Montana was part of the Frisco plan to eliminate duplicate lines and since the NP line had stiffer grades it was the one chosen to go. It was originally planned to be abandoned in chunks rather than saved. MRL came along and offered to buy/lease the line just days away from portions of the line being eliminated.
