The protests have been a block away from my house. For those of us in residential areas the biggest pain has been the press helicopters hovering above us until after two in the morning.

Reminds me of when my sister went to Cal. The great majority of the students just figured how to get to class and avoid the tear gas. In those days there WERE a few police riots that ended in the death of bystanders not involved. These days the police know what they are doing, but If this keeps up I expect a few (correctly) broken heads.

The biggest problem has been the "black block", anarchists from elsewhere who come into town on any excuse and trash the place. This is what caused the "occupy" movement to go downhill so fast.

I hope that the new students catch on. There was one protester last night who tried to stop some of the vandals trashing a Radio Shack. He got a hammer to the head and was taken to the hospital. He's ok.

If you go to Cal you learn quickly not to give money to the street people and that protests get taken over by people who just want to trash the place.
