In the late 60's the British Railways "Guided land Transportation Centre" in Crew was working on using plasma torches to clean the rails ahead of a train. The work was part of the "advanced gas passenger train" program, which was an ultimate failure. I saw a working truck with the plasma torches installed just ahead of the wheels. At that time the work was focused on improving braking distance during an emergency brake application. Over the years I have not seen any reports on the work continuing.
