Not mentioned in this thread; a fact that the roadbed was ballasted on the west side with lots of copper slag. Returning the ROW to the original owners would probably involve massive cleanup...maybe even SuperFunds, like the rest of Butte. I dont think even NP used Homestake Pass for freight..mostly for the passenger trains.
