I worked for a short time in the early 1980s around Howard/2nd St., and for lunchtime sometimes took a walk up the hill. Superior (?) Coffee was up there at Folsom & Hawthorne (from the smell sometimes, it was anything but superior, which was confirmed with a sip at places that served it), at the end of the line which did S-curves from Hawthorne back and forth across Folsom and into 2nd St., then down the hill to the south. All gone now, of course, and I'm not sure that there was any actual traffic on the line even then, but there were many places along 2nd and the side streets with spurs in front, on the sidewalk, or even inside the building, especially south of the freeway.
Hmmm ... Google railfanning ... there's a place at De Boom & 2nd that still has rails in the sidewalk and part of the in-building loading dock. Looks like they kept them for atmosphere .
