Since they're moving Amtrak into a different (and probably less convenient) part of the building, there's now a proposal to convert the main portion of the Sacramento depot into a "public market". Considering the access and parking problems the site has, I'm not so sure that's a great idea. Things have improved slightly with reconfigurations over the last year or 2, but it's still not great. Just try getting into the parking lot around train time, especially the Zephyr and Starlight which involve people with real luggage.

Having been tasked with meeting people coming in on both the NB Starlight and the last San Joaquin (SJ due into Sac about 2330, Starlight about 2350), I can say from personal experience that it can get to be quite a zoo around midnight if everything's on time, and even worse if the SJ is a tad late and the Starlight on time (which has been happening recently). Not sure how that's going to work with a Public Market there, too, and with Amtrak shoved into tighter quarters. It gets a little crowded when the Zephyr is there, too, but the westbound is almost always late (sometimes by days, not hours) so it's impossible to tell from day to day what conflicts there will be.
