Victorian? - Social Darwinism?
I suppose Darwin was of the Victorian era.
But it amazes me that anyone still thinks we humans somehow are above natural law, or will somehow escape natural selection. Besides, absent some sort of direct involvement from a God, the overall progress of mankind vitally depends upon it. But even so, natural processes will go on and on; no matter what level of sophistry we pretend to.
Also, I don't think the Victorians understood that the realities of this world apply just the same to human beings, as to any other creature. Certainly not any better than we do. We may not like it, but that dislike has no effect whatever upon nature.
The only real advantage we have is the intellectual capacity to make reasoned choice. It is part of being human. But choice always comes with natural consequence. Consequences that we cannot ultimately escape. Some of those consequences enhance and enrich life, but others are not so nice and diminish or destroy it. Hence there ARE good choices and not so good ones, which are the only things humans can actually do something about.
Now if you take away human choice by exercising unnecessary compulsion, you have diminished their humanity and dignity. Americans have long held that we are all created as equals. Do we believe that or not! Well it is still the "Law of the Land". Hence, no one's reasoning can be deemed superior to anyone else's. So which of us humans can rightfully claim authority to impose his own reasoning on others anyway? - besides NONE!
So, my point was that those who made the better choice in this matter are not being hurt by someone else's poor choice, it therefore is not a public matter. So we should stay the HE!! out of private matters. Besides, prior meddling in family matters has already had serious unintended consequences. We have done enough damage to the parent-child relationship and the naturally occurring family already. We need to stay out of other peoples doctors offices, just the same as we must stay out of their bedrooms. We should stay out of their family councils as well.
Yep - sure does sound like a victorian attitude to me - Yes sirree bob!
oh wait, the Victorians were European - but this is America. So maybe freedom of choice is actually an American Ideal. Hmmmn!
