Why do you think they'd run out of money? They get a piece of everything that gets sold in the district. I don't know how long it runs for, probably forever.
SMART is going to use DMUs because that's the appropriate way to start up. They can always go to electrics if they need to down the road. But right now, the ridership and the terrain isn't going to require the electrics. Not much travel through suburban areas. They aren't going to be running long trains making tons of stops. They don't the acceleration for a long packed commuter train that the electric would give you.
There was an article in the Nytimes about DMUs being put into use on some Long Island branches that don't have hardly any ridership.
It saves a lot of money.
There's no need for an electrified system in Marin.
One thing I don't understand is why they put in two stops in Novato. There's going to be exactly no one on the platformat Hamilton. Of course, if a major tech firm was to start a campus in Hamilton, that area would really get some use.
