I can commiserate. I have had to correct quite a few papers by non-native speakers. Some just need a few tweaks to smooth the English, and some need a talking to.
I had one PhD who was adding a data point. I asked him, "why?"
"Because the curve has to go through that point."
"Did you measure that point?"
"No, but..."
And then he wondered why the statistics program was blowing up... Dividing by zero. A classic "in the limit" situation.
But it was a good paper on radiotracers and got a lot of cites. He just needed a little direction.
Once I was doing some work at NIH and was staying at a hotel nearby. One of the meeting rooms was being used by a grant review committee. I poked my nose in the room in the evening when nobody was there. Every table, chair and part of the floor was stacked high with applications. My first thought was, "I'm glad I don't have to have anything to do with this process."
