This picture actually looks to the northeast (toward Pasadena) from the hill at elysian park, where it turns, to cross the river. In 1917 it replaced the Pasadena Avenue Bridge.

Prior to that, the Pasadena Avenue bridge (which this replaced) turned straight north and crossed the river with the original electric line to Pasadena. The foundations on the south side next to the cornfield, still has the remains showing of the advertisement for 8 trains daily to SFO-Oakland, which can be seen from the Gold Line (below the crew change platform) next to the Broadway bridge.

The early PE (via Highland Park) was rerouted to the west near county hospital (off of the other San Gabriel valley routes), and LA Railways took over most of the lines to Cypress, Highland Park, Eagle Rock, and North Broadway crossed here. This traffic congestion, (even then) should explain why the Pasadena Freeway was completed two years later.......

The SP Bullring shanty was located under this bridge.
