Mark, not disputing anything you say, but the success of any democracy depends on an educated electorate. The vast majority of voting members don't participate in the day-to-day affairs of building and operating a museum. At best they're causal, occasional visitors; thus, they rely on their education about museum affairs from the newsletter.
What are the long-term prospects when when the powers who like to think they are make a bureaucratic tweak to the election rules to switch from come to the annual meeting voting to mail balloting, and the newsletter has devolved into little more than paeans of ego and self-aggrandizement? You wind up with a lot of tainted votes, a situation not all that different from the buying of votes in Congress and state legislatures by lobbyists and special interests. The voting doesn't reflect the reality nor needs of the situation.
