Back in the days when SP ran the San Francisco commute trains, to keep on time the afternoon commute trains had to run up to a yellow signal at track speed reaching it just after it turned green. Occasionally a company official would prevent the signal from turning green and write up the next engineer who went past it at speed.

They also had radar guns that they used to check commute train speeds.
