The Denver light rail system has a hi-rail Unimog with both transit and standard railroad couplers. That system has an interchange track with UP, which is normally gated and blocked by derails on both sides.
But, if the light rail system receives a shipment of heavy equipment (replacement trucks or traction motors, for example) on railroad flatcars, it can send the Unimog to pull the car into the shops where the overhead crane can lift the items off. Or, if the shipment is light rail vehicles, they can be rolled off the flatcar via a ramp outside the shops.
I would guess that most Unimogs used in North America for switching are hi-rail vehicles equipped with rail wheels.
