Don't make stupid comments until you have walked in a persons shoes.
Being a ground pounder on a local, switching in the streets is something every rail does not look forward to. You don't want to even ride on the steps of the engine or the bottom rung of a ladder because of vehicles and the drivers. Oh, those submarine switches are a real pain. I would have to get off the engine sometimes to help a guy lift one of those bent plates that weighted a ton, all the time watching for crazy drivers.
I was working rhe 16th & Harrision afternoon goat one evening and was hauling a bunch of cars down 7th St. in the City. At the south end of 7th St., you would get a signal onto the main line at Tunnel One to go to Bayshore. A lady in an old Chev, came around the corner of the Greyhound garage and ran head on into us. The car was totaled in the front and she was gassed up. (Fri & Sat nights were the worse) She was pissed that we were in the street. She ranted and raved that trains were not allowed in streets, only cars, etc. The cops finally showed up, put her in their car and off to stoney lonesome. The tow truck hauled the car out of are way and we went on to Bayshore.
As far as fusee's, the stuff that drips out of them will burn a hole in your boot pretty quick. Thats why you never held it up. Always tilted down a bit and away from your body.
There are a lot of stories out there but unless you were there, and for many years, don't make stupid statements.
