Thanks Matt for the explanation. It sounds like it would difficult to have both #7 and #8 in the station at the same time.

Back in the 80s when I lived in Salt Lake and the Desert Wind and Pioneer both were split off the California Zephyr at Salt Lake City there was quite a bit of switching involved, especially when Amtrak used the Union Pacific depot before moving over to the Rio Grande depot. I am guessing that it was the most complicated mid-trip switching that has ever been done by Amtrak, but perhaps someone can nominate another Amtrak-era switching move for that honor?
