If you go to a site viewed by people who like trains and suggest that the tracks be removed you should expect serious opposition and criticism.
There are legitimate concerns about bike safety on high speed winding roads like Highway 84 designed before bike riding was popular that are probably too narrow for bike lanes and I hope a solution can be found to make the road safer.
I'm one of many people who rides a bike (on city streets) and also likes trains.
The train and especially its open air cars gives people a chance to enjoy the canyon without worrying about traffic.
Yes the trains are noisy and the steam engines don't meet air quality emission standards but they preserve a part of our history and give a great deal of enjoyment to people of all ages.
It would be nice if they could have a bike path near the RR right of way but it may not be possible.
There's also the whole issue of preserving the right of way for future more frequent commuter rail service even though that might eliminate the current operation.
Bike and train riders should work together to try and find a solution that accommodates both instead of trying to get rid of the tracks. A lot of time, money and volunteer labor has been invested to restore and operate the trains and that should not be in vain.
