At least 1/2 the weight of a locomotive is in its trucks.

Well, they're not attached to the pilot but the locomotive frame. Think of the pilot being essentially being made out of tissue paper compared to the locomotive frame.
I was speaking in the context of the locomotive derailing one truck. If you pick it up by the coupler, the other truck, still on the rails, will help keep it from tipping over. IF the thing is lying on its side in a ditch, that's another matter, and the crane people will try to use those shoe tings on the side sills to right it.
