The so called "Confederate" flag with its "X" shape is really a lot more ancient than supposed.
the "X" is found most obviously in the Union Jack. And the flag of Scotland, called the "Saltire," white x on blue background. And the Russian Navy Flag, blue x on white background. The X is known as Saint Andrew's Cross who didn't think himself worthy to be crucified on a regular cross like Christ so he requested the x. Saint Andrew was supposed to have evangelized Russia. It very well may go back to the time when the Patriarch Jacob blessed his grandsons, Ephraim and Manasseh by crossing his arms so the right arm rested on the head of Ephraim, thus conferring the firstborn blessings on the younger. Yes it appears in the confederacy in several state flags, but this is nothing compared to the ancientness of the story of Jacob, Ephraim and Manasseh when Joseph tried to get his father to uncross his arms. The real history is doubtless far more ancient and profound than relatively trivial contemporary political correctness issues. I suspect the confederate leaders who used this heraldry had at least an inkling of this. More to the point here, the x shaped cross adorns many thousands of railroad crossings. Shall we change all those in the name of a current/passing vogue?
