The yard is not open to the public, but sometimes...a member can escort you through the yard to look around. I was taking pictures through the fence once, and a member invited me into the yard to look around. It just depends on who's around, timing, etc.

If you go on a day when the trains are running, they probably won't let you into the yard (for safety reasons), but it's always worth a try. I would just ask one of the crew members when you visit.
