A signal bulb operates on about 12V and probably lasts about as long as the bulb in the headlight of your car. Obviously for lights that are continously lit they last a much shorter time than ones that are lit just before the train arrives. I have a restored signal and its on every night for about 6 hours going on 3 years with no burnout.
It seems the only thing special about a signal bulb is they are presorted so the filiment is the same in relation to the tabs on the base.
