South Gate Wye, was just north of Firestone Park/92nd Street yard limits, at the site of the former Firestone tire plant. It extended to Santa Ana, past the "old" ATSF depot, and down through S Santa Ana/Tustin to Dyer, where there was once a sugar beet plant. Steel plants and other industries on the "west end" around Patata, were served from locals based out of the South Gate GM plant. There were effectively no "through" movements from LA via Firestone, to Anaheim or Dyer, though.

Service for the Southern portion operated out of Anaheim )locals), and was connected to Industry via Los Nietos, and the UP. Sugar beet gondolas went down this line until at least the early 80's, operating as small "unit" beet trains (usually about 30 cars per day) from Industry. Haulers came from Industry "hauled" and set out normal traffic- inbounds (mostly loads) on sidings in Buena Park and Anaheim, where they picked up outbounds (mostly empties) and returned to Industry. Locals then switched out industrial customers on the branches based out of Anaheim.

Groundlings with back packs operating gensets have finally replaced all of the great hogheads (and good friends...)like Pat McDowell (Jr.)and RW Fogarty on these locals......
