The Nazis had to hide the gold and other items someplace to keep it from falling into opposing forces hands. I would bet they hit it in the tunnel with plans to come back after the war was over. Everyone who knew about it was probably killed by the opposing forces in the final days of the war. It could have also been a case of, we took it, it is ours and if we can't keep it nobody can have it.
