There is one fact to mull:

Wear to a semi-flexible pavement (read asphalt) increases as the 4.2 power of the axle weight.

This is a classic example of exponential increase and means that a semi can do thousands of times as much damage as a passenger car. This is why the subsidy to trucking is so large. Note that I am not arguing pro or con on that particular issue, but it would be nice if Amtrak was treated so kindly.
