Wow Mook, imagine a world where we make more reasonable and rationale decisions, decide to properly fund and operate these systems, and operate these modes in a way that actually adds riders to both systems? And, while you're right that this is partly a parochial feud over resources, it's also a fundamental failure to outwardly focus on their actual "mission".

Imagine agencies trying to provide the most efficient travel alternatives for a wide variety of trips, serving our diverse travel needs, in the most efficient, and effective manner, with the most appropriate mode?

New riders, who are attracted to the trains, are actually much more likely to transfer to and/or use a bus much more frequently. So while there is an off set, the numbers in LA indicate, an actual increase in bus ridership, (remember to include the huge increases in the non MTA local operators). This effect has actually been seen very clearly in places like Pasadena, Downtown LA, Hollywood, USC, and North Hollywood. And, specifically in these areas can really be seen when adding the local DASH and ARTS bus ridership, to the MTA totals. LACMTA, of course, operates both much of the rail and the bus system, and has fully embraced operating a "system", and making the appropriate changes necessary to do that, which is not the case in Marin.

SMART, like the Gold Line, will take some riders from some trips, while delivering a much larger pool of new riders to the (hopefully) appropriately restructured local services that improve mobility for all "system" users, by providing faster better service choices.

Remember Mook, as you listen to the dubious mind numbing babble of the bureaucratic protagonist's (as I did for years...), it's a transportation "system" to the "customer", almost none of whom could give a rat's ass about the bureaucratic turf issues and feuds between these agencies. The customer is trying to make rational travel choices and wants more efficient, effective, and reasonable choices, and don't give a rat's ass who runs it.

Note, I used the term "customer", a term we rarely use in transit, but should, instead of some of the usual pejorative names we affix to those who choose transit.

I know that sometimes it's hard to remember you came to drain the swamp, when you up to your ass in alligators......

When this kind of bureaucratic nonsense is at its worst, just remember to focus on clear goals and real outcomes, not the impediments put up by the almost always self serving and short sighted bureaucratic fiefdoms.
