There was one grower around Spence that had a huge sign made and posted at his crossing. You could even read it from driving 101. Memory tells me it was bright yellow with black letters.

It said,",, "STOP" Look both ways for trains.
If you get hit by a train, and you live, your fired."

There was a crossing around Chualar where an east man hit what they called a bus back then. It was just a semi trailer with slats for sides with wood benches.

I think there were over 38 pickers killed. It was after steam but the SP had some old Alcos or BLH engines on the point. That was the record in the USA for grade crossing deaths at one time.
