But as a practical matter, unless somebody who cannot speak for attribution from inside Metrolink is willing to post something, we can only know what has been said in public: Metrolink's lines have PTC installed and being tested, with an expected in-service date on or before January 1. We can speculate to our hearts' content, but can't *know*.

You're right, that leaves unsaid what the PTC-related condition of the UP and BNSF and other non-Metrolink track used by Metrolink is, whether or not Amtrak (Pacific Surfliner, mainly) equipment using Metrolink tracks is suitably equipped (could be both Amtrak and State issues, since some of the equipment is state-owned), and what the effect of a nationwide Class 1 passenger shutdown would be. Arguably, Metrolink could install PTC along the UP and BNSF lines it uses, but that would probably be a closely negotiated deal and we would know nothing about it unless Metrolink keeps running there during an otherwise complete shutdown. Again, unless somebody in the responsible organizations is willing to talk, or they make some new public filing with, say, FTA or STB about it, we can't know more than has already been released.
