Streetcar service in Eureka began in 1903 operated by Humboldt Transportation Co. In 1919 it was bought by the city and became the Eureka Municipal Railway, one of the earlier city owned transportation systems. Most of the cars were single truck California type cars. Operating loses were paid by city taxpayers.

The last day of service was in 1940. Enthusiasts set fire to one of the cars destroying it. The streetcars were replaced with city owned buses.
