The Chinese system described in the article is essentially similar in concept to Brookville's "hybrid" battery-powered trolley, which operates for short distances (up to a mile or so) on a battery and has a pantograph used elsewhere, or at a terminal station, to recharge and operate with. Recharging time is reasonably short but not instant but for a touristy operation it works. The supercapacitor used in China can recharge much more quickly than a battery, but doesn't store as much power, so stops have to be close together (much less than a mile) and the system recharges at each stop.
